Problem

In the initial months of the pandemic (January-February 2020), we felt the Indonesian government showed minimal preparedness for preventing and managing a potential outbreak despite receiving global health expert warnings.

Panic began to spread throughout Indonesia with the public announcement of the first COVID-19 case in early March. In contrast to other countries with informative applications and websites detailing COVID-19 case clusters, Indonesia lacked such resources. Given the prevailing circumstances, we felt Indonesians needed a dependable source for COVID-19 education and awareness.

Solution

Guided by the expertise of healthcare professionals from the Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Medicine and Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital, our mission was to develop a platform educating Indonesians about COVID-19 as soon as possible.

We developed EndCorona, a comprehensive and user-friendly resource for COVID-19 information and support, which contained the following key features:

Self-Assessment: A quick online assessment tool to indicate an individual's risk of COVID-19 infection, drawing on the latest research and insights from medical experts

Statistics: Data display on the number of national COVID-19 cases

News: Curation of COVID-19 news and online sources

Educative Content: Original infographic content on health protocols

Hotlines: List of available hotlines throughout the country

Measure of Success

Achieved the 6th rank in the Medical Apps category on the Indonesian App Store

Received a 4.9 rating on both the App Store and Play Store, accumulating 2,500 downloads

Gained exposure through national television and newsletters

Awarded with the SATU Indonesia award by Astra International

In the initial months of the pandemic (January-February 2020), we felt the Indonesian government showed minimal preparedness for preventing and managing a potential outbreak despite receiving global health expert warnings.

Panic began to spread throughout Indonesia with the public announcement of the first COVID-19 case in early March. In contrast to other countries with informative applications and websites detailing COVID-19 case clusters, Indonesia lacked such resources.

News regarding governmental unpreparedness for COVID-19.

Given the government's inadequate preparation and communication at the time, we felt Indonesians needed a dependable source for COVID-19 education and awareness. Hence, guided by healthcare professionals, our objective became clear: to develop a platform educating Indonesians about COVID-19 as soon as possible. The challenge can be defined into a central question:

How might we help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 and raise awareness among Indonesians?

From there, we deconstructed this central idea into three key points:

1.

How might we raise awareness of Indonesians’ risk of COVID-19 infection?

By enhancing awareness, we aimed to help individuals take preventive measures and self-assess their risk in situations where testing was unavailable. Experts from the Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Medicine and Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital strongly recommended this self-assessment tool.

2.

2.

2.

How might we educate Indonesians regarding COVID-19 health protocols?

By debunking myths and combating misinformation, quality education on COVID-19 health could contribute to slowing the rate of COVID-19 spread.

3.

3.

3.

How might we inform current updates to Indonesians about the potential COVID-19 pandemic?

Easy access to current COVID-19 updates can help individuals be informed about the latest developments in the pandemic.

We explored numerous COVID-19 dashboards worldwide, using them as design benchmarks.

Initial benchmarks for EndCorona.

From our analysis of these benchmarks, we ideated potential feature requirements for the app. We also identified numerous strategies for presenting case number statistics, maps, graphs, and numerical data within the application. This exploration and analysis familiarized us with existing products and enabled us to formulate fundamental requirements and brainstorm enhancements implemented in the mobile app.

Building upon the issues outlined earlier and the recommendations provided by health experts, we ideated several app features detailed below.

Defined features of EndCorona.

We roughly ideated and visualized the app's design and achieved agreement within the team.

Initial wireframe of EndCorona.

There was a sudden change of requirements during the early phase of prototyping due to the tight development timeline faced by our engineers. This necessitated a prioritization to develop features with the most significant impact and feasibility within our constraints.

As a result, we adjusted the statistics feature and, consequently, the app's structure. We assumed the statistics feature had greater development challenges despite it not being the primary focus of our app. We opted only to display the case numbers on the homepage and replaced the previous position of this feature with a national hotline list page.

Changes to the app's structure.

Prior to developing the prototype, we developed a simple design system as a fundamental guide for the design team, ensuring consistency and coherence within the app design. We aimed to have a design system that catered to a diverse demographic spanning teenagers to the elderly and both genders. In addition, we introduced a friendly mascot to create a more relatable and approachable connection with users despite the heavy theme of COVID-19.

We continually developed the design system along with the prototype development.

EndCorona design system.

Upon completing the initial version of the prototype, we carried out an online guerrilla usability test using Maze to quickly gather user feedback on all of the app’s features before the official launch. While the final score may not have been entirely precise (partially due to quits or intended misclicks), usability testing results gave us an overview of current design issues to address.

We carried out another usability testing through Maze once we revised the prototype and received an improved usability score, showing an improvement in the overall design.

Improvements derived from conducted usability testings.

Reflection

A great product begins with a great team

This app wouldn't have received the publication and appreciation if it weren't for each team member and involved experts from the Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Medicine and Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital. Motivation and determination enabled us to create a fully functional application within three weeks. This experience underscored the importance of considering the caliber of team members when aiming to deliver a high-quality product.

First hand-on experience initiated my growth in UX

Looking back, this project kickstarted my growth in UX by as it was my first time collaborating with other designers shipping a product. It exposed me to UX workflows, tools, and development methods and helped me acknowledge that there was much to learn and practice!
